Director Isaac Kleinerman’s Victory At Sea Theatrical Release Unearthed By The Film Chest For A DVD Push On Mar. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Film Chest announced this past week that it has unearthed and digitally remastered the original 1954 theatrical release of director Isaac Kleinerman’s Victory at Sea for DVD distribution on Mar. 17.

The Emmy-winner series of the same name delivered 26 episodes during the 1952/53 prime time television season that focused on the U.S. Navy during World War II through the use of actual combat footage.    Since television was still in its infancy, it was not uncommon during this period for multi-part programming, including both TV series and theatrical serials, to be re-edited and presented as self-contained theatrical releases (actually reaching a much wider audience during the summer of 1954).

Narrated by noted Shakespearean actor Alexander Scourby, this 98-minute presentation is tightly edited and delivers a superb overview of the wide-ranging array of naval engagements that marked an entire world at war between 1939 and 1945.   This is quite the find by The Film Chest!

Paramount Home Media Distribution Readies Massive TV-On-DVD Wave For Apr. 7

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
It will take you just about 415 hours to enjoy what Paramount Home Media Distribution has lined up for delivery to the DVD market place on Apr. 7.

If you watched steady, without a break, it would take over 17 days to watch everything … that would be, in all likelihood, an impossible task (human beings just don’t work that way).

Perhaps a better approach to the consumption of The Brady Bunch: The Complete Series (a 20-disc set featuring 117 episodes), Frasier: The Complete Series (44-disc set, complete with all 263 episodes), MacGyver: The Complete Collection (a 39-disc collection showcasing all 139 episodes) and Matlock: The Complete Series (a massive 52-disc set with 181 cases) would be to take them in at the rate of one episode per day.    700 days later and you would be all caught up!

The Film Detective Targets Feb. 10 As The Release Date For 12 Re-Mastered Film Classics On DVD

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Film Detective announced this past week that a dozen newly re-mastered classic films will be arriving on DVD this coming Feb. 10.

This group of films to own begin with director John Cromwell’s 1938 film adaptation of the Henri La Barthe’s novel, “Pepe Le Moko,” which was titled for the screen as simply Algiers.   Charles Boyer stars as Pepe le Moko and Hedy Lamarr shines as Gaby in the Hollywood production that made her a star … Boom Town, Ziegfeld Girl, Tortilla Flat and White Cargo would all follow in short order.

Continuing in the spirit of Hollywood screen legend are two films starring Elizabeth Taylor.  Director Michael Curtiz’s Life with Father was released in 1947 and featured Taylor opposite Irene Dunne and William Powell … Father's Little Dividend, 1951, was directed by Vincente Minnelli and is the hit sequel to Father of the Bride (Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett co-star here).

Cary Grant joins the hit parade with two films of his own.  Director Howard Hawks’ 1940 screwball comedy, His Girl Friday, teams him with Rosalind Russell, while director George Stevens’ 1941 romantic tale, Penny Serenade, earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor (his co-star was Irene Dunne).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyAnother screen legend getting a double-look as part of The Film Detective’s Feb. 10 release package is the late Mickey Rooney.   Director Irving Pichel’s 1950 film noir thriller Quicksand (opposite Jeanne Cagney and Peter Lorre) is joined by the post-war entry in the Andy Hardy film series, Love Laughs at Andy Hardy … Lewis Stone reprises his role as Judge Hardy, while Bonita Granville co-stars as Andy’s love interest.

Claudette Colbert shines as Japanese POW survivor Agnes Newton Keith in the 1950 film adaptation of her book, Three Came Home … Sessue Hayakawa co-stars.

Rounding out the Feb. 10 selections from The Film Detective are The Little Princess (1939, starring Shirley Temple), All American Co-Ed (1941, teaming Johnny Downs with Frances Langford), James Carney stars in the 1937 musical comedy, Something to Sing About, and lastly, the 1941 comedy teaming Roland Young with Billie Burke as Mrs. and Mrs. Cosmo Topper, Topper Returns … Joan Blondell and Carol Landis join the fun.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Director Zhang Zhiliang’s The White Haired Witch will be making its domestic DVD and Blu-ray debut this coming Mar. 10 courtesy of Well Go U.S.A.

The Ming Dynasty is in its death stages and treachery abounds in this lavish tale of internecine warfare.   In addition to its lush cinematography and elaborate stunt choreography, The White Haired Witch stars the stunning Fan BingBing (Buddha Mountain, Cell Phone, etc.) as the title character, a sorceress with incredible fighting skills whose real name is Jade.

When she is double-crossed and implicated in the assassination of the provincial governor, Jade suddenly finds herself very much alone, especially so since the man she has fallen in love with, Zhuo Yihang (Huang Xiaoming — The Message, Sacrifice, The Last Tycoon, IP Man 2), appears to have turned against her.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
You can’t really blame him as the governor was his uncle, but he too must play the game of court intrigue until the real culprits can be exposed!

This mega-budget action spectacular is presented in Cantonese with English subtitles.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainments Tabs Feb. 24 As The Street Date For DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Editions Of Horrible Bosses 2

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment rings in the New Year with the Feb. 24 release announcement of writer/director Sean Anders’ Horrible Bosses 2.

Planned are DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (with UltraViolet) editions, with the Blu-ray SKU featuring two cuts of the film — the R-rated theatrical release and an unrated cut that clocks in with an extra eight-minutes of excised footage.

The ARR is a swift-to-market 88 days and ticket sales were a nice $53.1 million.

Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) are back, but this time as their own bosses.    It doesn’t matter, the “horrible” is still there as they get suckered into a ruinous business deal with the father and son team of Bert and Rex Hanson (played by Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine).

Of course their solution to getting out from under the mess becomes far more complicated than they could have ever anticipated.   The double-dealing quickly turns into a series of deadly double-crosses that leaves the suckered business partners facing potentially stiff prison sentences.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Jennifer Aniston reprises her role as the sex-addicted dentist, Jamie Foxx is back as their go-to guy (who has plans of his own) and Kevin Spacey does a nice turn as their mentor, who even in prison manages to get the best of the numbskull trio.

Bonus features include a trio of featurettes — “Endless Laughter Guaranteed,” “Let the Sexual Healing Begin” and “Off-the-Cuff: One-Liners You Didn't See.”

Mill Creek Entertainment Announces A Two-Wave Release Blitz For The Month Of March

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Mill Creek Entertainment will be delivering some “March Madness” of its own with a double-wave of priced-to-own DVD and Blu-ray collectibles during the month.

The first wave of releases arrives on Mar 3 and features the seven-part, double-disc series Vietnam: 50 Years Remembered.   Blu-ray and DVD editions will be available.

From the producers of Up From Slavery and The Presidents: From Politics to Power, the history of the United States’ involvement in Indochina/Vietnam from the post World War II period through all-out conflict and to the aftermath of the Vietnam War is explored in detail in this six-hour presentation.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Also arriving on Mar. 3 — and you will need to have Kleenex at the ready — are two faith-based films being released by Mill Creek Entertainment that are priced to own at just $9.98 each.

First time director Jim Huggins had a true-life story that he wanted to share with others.   He soon learned that writing, producing and directing a film had more to do with raising money then the mechanics of actually filming the story.   It was a two-year journey that grew literally by word of mouth into an absolutely wonderful film.

As actors, film technicians and those who loved animals learned of his project, they donated their skills, their time and their money to the project.   Over 500 people were involved in bringing Footprints to life … it’s an amazing story all on to itself.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyDavid (played by Chris Faherty) is on the verge of losing everything.   He’s blown it and there is, in his mind, no hope.  But hope arrives from an unlikely source, an abused German Shepherd, who is rescued by David and together this strange duo of hopeless and helpless deliver salvation and redemption to each other.

Of note, the entire title for Footprints is Footprints: Angels are Real. Some Even Have Fur.   During the filming, which is heartfelt and all there on the screen to be enjoyed, seven different German Shepard “rescue” dogs were used … all found new homes of their own.
The other “animal” tale is director Michael Spence’s Dove Family-Approved true-life story, Friends for Life.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Jim (Michael Flynn) is a high-powered attorney who is used to winning.   Life is good, until his beloved wife dies of cancer and all, for him, is lost.   Quite by accident (arranged by an angel) he comes across four orphaned wolf cubs, who are starving and have little hope to survive but for another day or two.

He takes them home and devotes himself to raising them, but despite his love for the animals that have become so much apart of him, he realizes that they must be returned to the wild.   It is perhaps more than he can bear, but what follows in the wake of their release will move him to the core.   Like we said, get the Kleenex ready!!!

Rounding out the Mar. 3 wave are the double-disc releases of Bible Stories for Kids  and the Spanish-language version, Historias de la Biblia para Ninos, the Royal Princess Collection: Cinderella & Friends and the four-disc collection titled Toon Tube: 200 Classic Cartoon Collection (this set is a real bargain … just $9.98 for 22 hours worth of animated entertainment that includes 19 Betty Boop theatrical cartoons, 24 Hoppity Hooper cartoons, eight Felix the Cat cartoons and more!).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Two weeks later, Mar. 17, Mill Creek Entertainment is back with seven new priced to own DVD selections.

Included here are four new additions to its popular “Anniversary Series” — 25th Anniversary Series: The Big Picture (directed by Christopher Guest and starring Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Jason Leigh), 40th Anniversary Series: White Line Fever (Jan-Michael Vincent and Kay Lenz star), 50th Anniversary Series: Genghis Khan (featuring an all-star cast that includes Omar Sharif, Stephen Boyd, James Mason, Telly Savalas and Eli Wallach) and 75th Anniversary Series: Arizona (William Holden and Jean Arthur).

Mar. 17 concludes with three new additions to Mill Creek Entertainment’s “Hollywood Legends” collectible series.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
First up is Hollywood Legends: Shirley Temple, which includes three of her films — The Little Princess, Law of Vengeance and The Red-Haired Alibi — plus 11 of her short films: Dora’s Dunkin’ Doughnuts, Glad Rags to Riches, Kid ‘N’ Africa, Kid ‘N’ Hollywood, Managed Money, Merrily Yours, Pardon My Pups, The Pie Covered Wagon, Polly Tix in Washington, War Babies and Biggest Lil’ Star of the 30’s.

Next in line is Hollywood Legends: Lucille Ball, which is a double-disc collection featuring four of Lucy’s films — Her Husband's Affairs, Miss Grant Takes Richmond, The Fuller Brush Girl and The Magic Carpet.

Lastly, we have Hollywood Legends: Marlon Brando, also a double-disc collection containing four his films — The Wild One, The Freshman, One-Eyed Jacks and The Chase.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The following week, Mar. 24, a new hi-def transfer of Japanese filmmaker Teruo Ishii’s 1970 Yakuza thriller, Blind Woman's Curse, will be available for genre fans to savor as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack.

This stylish cult gem features commentary from Japanese cinema expert Jasper Sharp — author of “Behind the Pink Curtain: The Complete History of Japanese Sex Cinema” and co-author of “The Midnight Eye Guide to New Japanese Film.”

The month of March concludes with the 1967 Spaghetti Western from director Tonino Valerii, Day of Anger, starring screen legend Lee Van Cleef along with Giuliano Gemma (aka: Montgomery Wood).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Fully restored from the original Technicolor film negatives, Arrow Video will be delivering this Blu-ray/2 DVD Combo Pack with two distinct viewing options.   Fans can enjoy either the original Italian-language version, complete with newly prepared English subtitles, or the 1969 English-dubbed domestic theatrical presentation.

Bonus features here include a newly-prepared video interview with screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi (Torso, The Grand Duel, The Battle of El Alamein and many more), plus a vintage interview with director Tonino Valerii and newly-prepared video insights with Valerii biography Roberto Curti (author of “Italian Crime Filmography, 1968-1980”).

Team Marketing Selects Feb. 24 As The Street Date For A Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Edition Of The Ohio State University's National Championship Game

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
After years of insipid intransigence the NCAA finally saw the merits of a national playoff for college football.   The solution of a four-team playoff wasn’t perfect, but the results were nothing short of electrifying.

The two semi-final games posted record ratings for ESPN, but these records were smashed when the mighty Oregon Ducks took on the underdog Buckeyes from The Ohio State University on January 12, 2015.   All ESPN Bowl audience records were crushed with a record number of 33.4 million viewers … the Bowl Championship Series is an unqualified success.

News arrived within hours of the stunning 42 to 20 blowout of the heavily favored Oregon Ducks by the Buckeyes that Team Marketing will be releasing a DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition of the 2015 BCS National Championship Game on Feb. 24.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
But wait!   There’s more!!   Feb. 24 also brings to market DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions of the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl — the breathtaking come-from-behind upset of Alabama by The Ohio State University — 2015 Northwestern Mutual Rose Bowl Game (Oregon crushes Florida State), 2015 Goodyear Cotton Bowl (Michigan State stuns Baylor 42-41), 2015 Vizio Fiesta Bowl (Boise State over Arizona 38-30), 2015 Chic-Fil-A Peach Bowl Game (TCU blows-out Ole Miss 42-3) and the 2015 Capital One Orange Bowl (the Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech takes out Mississippi State 49-34).

The Theory Of Everything On DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack From Universal Studios Home Entertainment On Feb. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Someone over at Universal Studios Home Entertainment was up well before dawn on the morning of the Oscar nominations with an announcement at the ready for director James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything.  It will be out as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (with UltraViolet) editions on Feb. 17.

The Oscar telecast will take place on the following Sunday, Feb. 22, so the timing is spot-on for maximum sales impact.

For the record, the ARR is 102 days and box office receipts currently are on the slight side with just $25.9 million in ticket sales recorded since the film opened during the first weekend of November.   The number of tickets sold will improve dramatically in the next couple of weeks if the studio can somehow add screens to its relatively light rollout of the film (just a little over 400 screens were still active on the morning of the Oscar nominations — the initial launch was just over 1,200 screens).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The Theory of Everything picked up Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking), Best Actress (Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Anthony McCarten for the screen adaptation of Jane Hawking’s book, “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen”) … all are first time nominees.

Bonus features include commentary from director James Marsh (Oscar-winning for his documentary, Man on Wire), deleted scenes (with optional commentary by Marsh) and the featurette titled “Becoming the Hawkings.”

HBO Home Entertainment's Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season Will Be Available On DVD And Blu-ray This Coming Feb. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
HBO Home Entertainment has an ambitious Q1’15 first quarter planned, which is highlighted by the Feb. 17 arrival of Blu-ray (4 discs) and DVD (5 discs) sets of the much-anticipated Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season.

Bonus features here include a pair of 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurettes — “Behind the Battle for the Wall” and “The Fallen Roundtable” — episode commentaries, a pair of deleted scenes and three additional (shorter) production featurettes — “Histories & Lore,” “The Politics of Power” and “Bastards of Westeros.”

Arriving one week earlier (Feb. 10) — as both Blu-ray and double-disc DVD product offerings — is the four-part mini-series adaptation of writer Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Olive Kitteridge.   Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and Bill Murray head the cast with Best Writing Oscar-nominee (The Kids are All Right) Lisa Cholodenko handling the direction.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Shifting to Mar. 31 … we find two series heading home.   First, the debut of Mike Judge’s — the creator of Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill — first live-action cable series, Silicon Valley: The Complete First Season.

Double-disc DVD and Blu-ray SKUs are planned … bonus features include episode commentaries and three production featurettes — “Making Silicon Valley,” “Tech Crunch: Disrupt!” and “The Hacker Hostel.”

Also heading home on Mar. 31 is Veep: The Complete Third Season, starring Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus as vice president Selina Meyer … all ten episodes will be available as either double-disc DVD or double-disc Blu-ray product offerings.
Bonus features include deleted scenes and episode commentaries.

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment's Birdman To Fly Home On Blu-ray And DVD On Feb. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Likely to be lost in the rush to take advantage of films nominated for Oscars will be the DVD and Blu-ray (with UltraViolet) launch of writer/director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman.

The street date will be Feb. 17, which is timed correctly as the Oscar awards telecast is on Feb. 22, but 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment has taken the position during the past few months that promotional support (publicity, marketing and advertising) for its new theatrical releases headed to the home entertainment market place is simply not necessary.

If this attitute de l'indifférence complète holds to form, then Birdman will not receive much in the way of a PR effort from 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment, despite being nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro González Iñárritu — previously nominated for Babel), Best Actor (Michael Keaton — his first Oscar nomination), Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton — nominated previously for American History X and Primal Fear), Best Supporting Actress (Emma Stone — her first Oscar nomination) and Best Original Screenplay (Iñárritu, along with Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. and Armando Bo).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The ARR for that Feb. 17 street date works out to 123 days and the box office take thus far is light at just $26.3 million.   The film opened last October and is down to just a handful of screens, so improvement on the domestic box office front will be tough to come by.

In what has become an all-too-common pattern for new product announcements emanating from 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment, there is no word, just yet, on any bonus features that might be included with either the DVD or Blu-ray release of Birdman.

Anchor Bay Entertainment's St. Vincent Will Arrive As DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Product Offerings On Feb. 17

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Anchor Bay Entertainment announced this past week that writer/director (and producer) Ted Melfi's St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray, along with Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts, will be heading home as DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offerings on Feb. 17.

The ARR is 130 days and domestic ticket sales on the run-up to the Oscar nominations stood at  $47.1 million.

Bonus features are deleted scenes and a Q&A session with actor Bill Murray.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment To Release Big Hero 6 On DVD And Blu-ray On Feb. 24

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The directing team of Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) will see DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of their smash animated hit, Big Hero 6, released to retailers on Feb. 24.

The ARR is 109 days and ticket sales were a robust $211.2 million.

Bonus features include the theatrical short film titled Feast, deleted scenes and a pair of production featurettes — “The Origin Story of Big Hero 6: Hiro's Journey” and “Big Animator 6: The Characters Behind the Characters.”

Post-Hack Sees Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Moving Quickly With Blu-ray And DVD Release Dates For The Interview And Annie

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
If there ever was a bungle mess of a release — either theatrically or to home entertainment — Sony Pictures has easily laid claimed to the prize with its handling of director Evan Goldberg’s (along with star Seth Rogan) The Interview.  It is not even open for discussion … they simply blew it at every step along the way.

Word came down this week that after 53 days in theatrical release The Interview will be made available as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack SKUs on Feb. 17 — and at bargain prices to boot.   Ticket sales currently stand at $5.8 million.

There’s no word just yet as to any bonus features that might be included with these home entertainment product offerings.

Also, with no fanfare and a whiff of continued panic over at Sony Pictures, writer/director Will Gluck’s remake of Annie will be rushed to home entertainment as DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (with UltraViolet) editions on Mar. 10.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
That street date yields an exceptionally fast ARR of just 81 days.  The studio had been holding to 88 days as a minimum window for films grossing in excess of $25 million, but with the infamous hack job and the corporate missteps that have followed it appears that this particular film is being giving the bum’s rush to home entertainment.

Get it out … and move on, that’s the Sony Pictures motto these days.  Soon there will be a corporate housecleaning, new management will come in at the studio level and these films (from the previous administration) will be written off and quickly forgotten.

The box office take for Annie is currently at a respectable $79.3 million and there is also no word as to any bonus goodies … which is understandable.
