Mill Creek Entertainment Selects May 1 For The Release Of The DVD Collection Titled The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyIf you say William Castle, you immediately think of horror films.  But before he became a producer and showman extraordinaire with such horror classics as House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, 13 Ghosts and Strait-Jacket, he learned the craft of movie-making at Columbia Pictures under the guidance of Harry Cohn and “Jungle Sam” Katzman.

Between 1943 and 1956 he directed 40 films … and not a single one of them was a horror film.  He did four films in The Whistler series (with Richard Dix), a trio of the Crime Doctor (Warner Baxter) movies and some gangster/crime films — Johnny Stool Pigeon (1949 with Howard Duff, Dan Duryea, Shelley Winters and newcomer Tony Curtis) and Undertow (also 1949 with Scott Brady, Johnny Hart, John Russell and another newcomer Roc Hudson … soon to be Rock Hudson).

He also did Westerns, really good Westerns, during this period and Mill Creek Entertainment let it be known this past week that on May 1 they will be releasing as a double-disc DVD set The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West … collectors, film buffs and Western fans are already salivating at the thought of picking up this beauty at the bargain price of just $19.98 (and that’s before discounts at retail).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Included in the mix is one of his first films at Columbia Pictures, the 1943 Western, Klondike Kate, starring Ann Savage and Tom Neal, who would make screen history together in 1945 with the film noir classic, Detour.

He then became very active in the genre during 1953 through 1955, delivering Conquest of Cochise (1953, in Technicolor with John Hodiak, Robert Stack and Joy Page), Masterson of Kansas (1954, in Technicolor with George Montgomery as Bat Masterson, James Griffith as Doc Holliday and Bruce Cowling as Wyatt Earp … with Nancy Gates and Jay Silverheels) and Jesse James vs The Daltons (1954, in Technicolor with Brett King as the “son” of Jesse James, Barbara Lawrence as woman he saves from the hangman and James Griffith, William Phipps, John Cliff and William Tannen as the Daltons … and Rory Mallinson as Bob Ford, the man who shot Jesse James).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyKlondike Kate, Conquest of Cochise, Masterson of Kansas and Jesse James vs The Daltons make up half of the collection … you could quit right there and call this a “keeper,” but Mill Creek Entertainment has four more in The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West set on May 1 to thrill fans.

These are: Battle of Rogue River (1954, in Technicolor and starring George Montgomery, Richard Denning and Martha Hyer) and The Gun That Won the West (1955, in Technicolor) starring Dennis Morgan as Jim Bridger with Paula Raymond and Richard Denning).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyRounding out the collection, which are not really Westerns (in the truest sense) are Duel On The Mississippi (1956, in Technicolor … the action takes place in 1820, starring Lex Baxter, Warren Stevens and Patricia Medina as Lili Scarlet) and Uranium Boom (1956, black and white with Dennis Morgan, William Talman and Patricia Medina).

WOW, just WOW, that’s all you can say about these William Castle films that Mill Creek Entertainment has assembled for the May 1 DVD debut of The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West.

Also announced this past week is the May 1 DVD release of director Lee Philips’ 1986 biopic, Barnum, starring four-time Oscar nominee Burt Lancaster (with a win for Elmer Gantry) as the legendary showman Phineas Taylor “P.T.” Barnum (of note, 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment’s The Greatest Showman arrives in the home entertainment marketplace on Apr. 10).

The Film Chest Tabs May 1 For The DVD Release Of Dark Film Mysteries II

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Film Chest announced this past week that it will be back with a second volume of film noir treasures on May 1 with the three-disc DVD presentation of Dark Film Mysteries II.

The SRP is just $19.98 for 12 films … and that’s before discounts being offered at retail.

So what does the set include, for starters, director Rudolph Maté Atomic Age thriller, D.O.A., starring Edmond O’Brien as a man who has been murdered and has but a very short time to solve the mystery of who and why.    Cast members in this film noir masterpiece include Pamela Britton, Lynn Baggett, William Ching, Luther Adler, Neville Brand and newcomer Beverly Garland (in her film debut).

Next up in the Dark Film Mysteries II collection is director Arthur Lubin’s 1949 twisted crime tale, Impact, which has Brian Donlevy surviving his own murder … at the hands of his wife’s lover.   The twist is that his wife (played by Helen Walker) is charged with his murder … the police are convinced that the burned beyond recognition body (Tony Barrett) is him.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyMeanwhile, the dazed and disillusioned Donlevy has settled town in a small Idaho town and has fallen in love with a lonely widow (Ella Raines) and is content to let his wife hang.   You know that it just can’t be that easy in a “twisted” film noir thriller!

Impact and D.O.A., and we are just getting started.   The collection also includes director André De Toth’s 1948 film adaptation of the Jay Dratler novel, Pitfall, starring Dick Powell, Lizabeth Scott and Jane Wyatt, filmmaker Ida Lupino’s 1953 edge-of-your-seat thriller, The Hitch-Hiker, starring Edmond O'Brien, Frank Lovejoy and William Talman and the 1945 Edgar G. Ulmer film noir tale, Strange Illusion, with Jimmy Lydon as a young man out to stop his mother (Sally Eilers) from marrying a psychopath (Warren William).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Rounding out the Dark Film Mysteries II collection are Club Paradise (1945, with Robert Lowery and Doris Merrick), Hollow Triumph (1948, directed by Steve Sekely and teaming Paul Henreid with Joan Bennett), Cause for Alarm (1951, starring Loretta Young, Barry Sullivan and Bruce Cowling), Suddenly (1954, with Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden and Nancy Gates), He Walked By Night (1948 starring Richard Basehart), They Made Me a Criminal (1939 all-star Warner Bros. production with John Garfield, Ann Sheridan, Claude Raines and The Dead End Kids) and Port of New York (1949, with Scott Brady, Richard Rober and Yul Brynner).

Documentary Filmmaker Jason Barket's Marx Reloaded On DVD From Icarus Films On May 1

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Icarus Films has tabbed May Day (May 1), appropriately enough, as the DVD release date for documentary filmmaker Jason Barker’s Marx Reloaded, a retrospective look at the 2008 financial meltdown from a Karl Marx perspective.

Timed for the bicentennial celebration of 19th Century German philosopher Karl Marx’s birthday (May 8), Marx Reloaded, makes the case that the 2008 financial crisis — brought on by the collapse of the housing market — could have (would have) been predicted by the writing of Marx.   In presenting his case, Barker (in interviews) hit upon the idea of using the Matrix and the “red pill/blue pill” sequence as a metaphor to make the subject a little less “dry.”

A number of academics are interviewed in the documentary, including Oxford political philosopher John Gray (author of “False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism”), author Michael Hardt (author of “Empire” and “Multitude: War and Democracy in the Age of Empire), Nina Power (academic and author of “One-Dimensional Woman”) and philosopher Slavoj Žižek.

There is also a clever animated sequence featuring Marx in debate with Leon Trotsky, which plays off of the Matrix conceit.

Icarus Films has included Marx Reloaded Bob Godfrey’s 1979 animated short film titled Marx for Beginners.

Vinegar Syndrome Announces Its DVD And Blu-ray Release Slate For The Month Of April (Apr. 24)

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Vinegar Syndrome announced its April release calendar of film restorations heading home as DVD and Blu-ray product offerings this past week.   The street date will be Apr. 24.

Of course it is always a subjective view as where to start, but with Vinegar Syndrome having released British filmmaker Norman J. Warren’s Prey as a 2K restored (from the original 35mm negative) Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack in February, why not start with his next film, the Halloween of 1979 theatrical release of Terror.

This indie film production was picked up by Crown International Pictures for release in the domestic market, which was a better fate than Warren’s Prey, which had to go the direct-to-video route in the United States.  In any case, this very British horror/mystery is good fun, which plays more like a traditional Italian giallo film — Suspiria, Deep Red, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, etc. — which were popular in the 1970s.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The film itself begins as the ending of a Gothic witch-burning tale (you fully expect to see Vincent Price in full costume participating in the activities) directed by a chap named James Garrick (John Nolan — as Fredricks in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises), which leads us to the arrival of the “victim” pool for a preview screening of the film at his family mansion.   We get a little backstory on the film production, which Garrick believes is based on an actual curse that has followed his family around for nearly 300 years.

His cousin Ann (Carolyn Courage) appears to be at the center of some strange goings-on at the party, which quickly devolve into a series of gruesome murders that begin the same night as the party.  These all seem to have some relationship to Ann, perhaps she is a magnet … or the source?

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyEven the police, in their investigation of the killings, are not immune to Ann’s “following,” which will all be revealed in the final confrontation back at the Garrick family mansion (hint: it ends as it began … pay close attention to a particular character in the movie ending that was at the beginning of the story).

Terror is a 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative, and, as mentioned, it will be available on Apr. 24 as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyBonus goodies include deleted and extended scenes, six newly minted video sessions with director Norman J. Warren, screenwriter David McGillivray and cast members Carolyn Courage (as Ann), Tricia Walsh (as Viv), Mary Maude (as Lady Garrick) and Peter Craze (an adult filmmaker), plus Diabolique Magazine’s Kat Ellinger is featured in an extended interview session with filmmaker Norman J. Warren.

Also on the release calendar from Vinegar Syndrome on Apr. 24 is a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack presentation of J. Christian Ingvordsen’s 1989 film serial killer thriller, Blue Vengeance.   Bonus features include two separate commentary tracks — one with filmmaker J. Christian Ingvordsen and the second with actor John Weiner — a documentary titled Making Blue Vengeance and the featurette titled “On Blue Vengeance.”  As an added attraction, co-writer Danny Kuchuck’s 1996 film, The First Man, is included as a bonus feature.

Also on the direct-to-video front is director Jim Mallon’s 1986 slasher film, Blood Hook, which is getting a 2K restoration from the film’s original 16mm camera negative.   Blood Hook will be available as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack on Apr. 24.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyBonus features include a trio of featurettes — “Hook, Line and Sinker,” “First Blood Hook” and “What’s in the Tacklebox?” — plus a video session with cinematographer and editor Marsha Kahm.

On DVD release front, Vinegar Syndrome has two adult gems ready for connoisseurs to savor.   Adult filmmaker Carlos Tobalina’s two-part tale of family greed and lust, Flesh & Laces, Part I (June of 1983) and Flesh & Laces, Part II (September of the same year) arrives as a 2K restoration (yes, from 35mm source material) and Zachary Youngblood & Curt McDowell’s 1983 adult/arthouse film, Little Showoffs, arrives with all six erotic vignettes intact and featuring a 2K restoration from the film’s 35mm camera negative) … bonus features include video sessions with writer/director Zachary Youngblood and AD Molly Seagrim.
